Our Rolling Programme

Using a range of teaching schemes including Curriculum Maestro, has meant that we have clear coverage in our foundation  curriculum.   There are a series of projects that help to interlink the teaching of History, Geography, Science, Design Technology, Art and Design. Our Curriculum is interleaved so that children have the ability to recall and revise their knowledge, and we then spiral opportunities to gain breadth and depth.

To ensure our curriculum rolling programme remains up to date and relevant for all of our children we review and update the rolling programme on a yearly basis in the Summer term.

Our Evolving Curriculum

At our school, we are committed to providing a high-quality, forward-thinking curriculum that prepares children not just for today, but for the future of education.
We continue to review and refine our curriculum in line with the direction of the National Curriculum, ensuring that our approach remains up to date, purposeful and manageable, while retaining a strong focus on core knowledge and understanding.
Our curriculum is designed to:

• Build secure knowledge and understanding across all subjects
• Provide a clear and well-structured learning journey for every child
• Reduce unnecessary workload so learning is focused and meaningful
• Stay aligned with national developments, so children are fully prepared for future expectations

As national guidance evolves, we continue to update our curriculum to reflect the latest thinking, ensuring minimal disruption for children while keeping learning current and relevant.

Alongside strong academic foundations, our curriculum also places increasing emphasis on:

• Speaking and listening skills (oracy)
• Creativity, drama and performance
• Environmental awareness and sustainability
• Personal development and adaptability
• Understanding the world from local, national and global perspectives
• Inclusion, diversity and representation

This ensures that children not only gain essential knowledge, but also develop the skills, confidence and awareness they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

THE FOUR CORNERSTONES

The four cornerstones have provided a solid foundation for planning our 2 year rolling programme for our foundation subjects.  They have provided a clear structure for lesson development whilst ensuring subject progression in all areas.  The most important underlying principle of a curriculum is to help children learn. We believe that a successful curriculum is brought to life by high quality teaching, inspirational learning activities and opportunities to listen and plan for the developing interests and motivations of children.

That is why the Cornerstones Primary Curriculum is built upon a four stage teaching and learning philosophy

What do the Four Cornerstones look like?

Engage

DURING THE ENGAGE STAGE CHILDREN WILL…

• have memorable first-hand experiences – for example going on a visit outside the classroom or inviting a specialist visitor into the classroom
• have WOW experiences – Investigate and Discover
• be introduced in exciting ways to the new topic or theme
• begin initial research and set enquiry questions
• have lots of opportunity to make observations
• develop spoken language skills
• take part in sensory activities
• have a great deal of fun, allowing them to fully ‘engage’ with their new topic

Develop

DURING THE DEVELOP STAGE CHILDREN WILL…

• dig much deeper to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of a topic across the curriculum
• practice their newfound skills
• compose, make, do, build, investigate, explore, write for different purposes, read across the curriculum
• research their own questions and those posed by others
• follow new pathways of enquiry based on their own interests
• complete homework activities that support their learning in school

Innovate

DURING THE INNOVATE STAGE CHILDREN WILL…

• apply previous skills, knowledge and understanding in real life contexts
• be challenged with real or imagined problems and situations to solve using knowledge and skills from the earlier stages
• be inspired with imaginative and creative opportunities
• have time to revisit skills, knowledge and understanding not grasped during the develop stage
• have the opportunity to take on different role

Express

DURING THE EXPRESS STAGE CHILDREN WILL…

• become the performers, the experts, the informers
• share their achievements with others in many different ways…parents, peers and the community
• evaluate finished products/processes
• tie learning back to the beginning
• celebrate

To further support our curriculum, year team’s may decide to have themed weeks around a specific subject to further enhance the learning experience for children.
